Rust Map Sizes

A Rust world is a square, and its size is set in metres — a 4000 map is 4 km across. Here's what each common size means and which to pick.

SizeAreaBandBest for
30003 × 3 km · 9 km²SmallTight and fast — solos, duos and low-pop servers. Monuments are close together, so travel and roams are short.
35003.5 × 3.5 km · 12.25 km²MediumA common default. Enough room for a healthy population without the map feeling empty.
40004 × 4 km · 16 km²MediumThe typical high-pop vanilla size — space for lots of bases and every monument, without huge dead zones.
45004.5 × 4.5 km · 20.25 km²LargeBig-server territory. More monuments and more room to hide a base, but longer travel to fights.

Which size should you pick?

Match the size to your population, not the other way round. A big map with few players feels empty — long walks, no fights, monuments nobody contests. A small map with a full server is constant chaos. As a rule of thumb, aim for roughly one player per 100–150 metres of map edge and adjust from there.

Bigger maps also generate more monuments and more room to hide a base, at the cost of longer travel and more that has to load. Servers can technically run anything from 1000 to 6000, but below 3000 the map is cramped and above 4500 it starts to feel deserted unless you're genuinely full.

Setting the size on your server

Size is a server launch setting, not something you change in-game:

+server.worldsize 4000

It pairs with the seed — the two together decide the whole world. Change either and you get a different map, which is why size and seed are usually only changed at a wipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Rust map size?expand_more

There's no single best — match it to population. 3000 suits solos and low-pop; 4000 is the common high-pop vanilla size; 4500 is for big servers. Too big for the player count feels empty; too small feels cramped.

What is the default Rust map size?expand_more

There's no fixed default — each server sets its own world size at launch with +server.worldsize. Many pick 3500 or 4000.

How do I change the map size?expand_more

Set +server.worldsize (in metres) in your server's launch options, alongside the seed. It only takes effect on a fresh generation, so it's normally changed at a wipe.
