Rust Biomes
Every Rust map is banded into four biomes, from frozen to desert. Which one you start in shapes your early game — temperature, resources and how exposed you are.
Arctic
The frozen extreme — deep snow, almost no natural cover. You take cold damage without warm clothing, and there's little to gather, but it hides bases well because few people live there.
On the map: Bright white, usually a band along one edge of the map.
Tundra
Snowy pine forest between the temperate zone and the arctic. Cold but survivable, with wood and some ore — a common early-base biome for players who want quiet.
On the map: Pale blue-green with darker pine cover.
Temperate
The default grassland-and-forest biome and where most of the map lives. Comfortable temperature, plenty of wood, stone and animals — the standard place to start.
On the map: Green, the largest share of most maps.
Arid
The desert — sand, sparse scrub and hot days. Good sightlines and cactus for cloth, but exposed. Often where the bigger monuments and open PvP end up.
On the map: Sandy tan/yellow, usually opposite the arctic edge.
Where should you start?
For a first base, temperate is the safe pick — mild temperature and everything you need to gather. Tundra is a quieter alternative if you want fewer neighbours. Arctic and arid both punish you: the arctic needs warm clothing or you take cold damage, and the arid leaves you exposed with little cover. Experienced players use those edges precisely because most people avoid them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many biomes are in Rust?expand_more
Four — arctic, tundra, temperate and arid — banded from the cold edge of the map to the hot one.
What is the best biome to build in?expand_more
Temperate is the safe default: mild temperature and full resources. Tundra is quieter; arctic and arid are harsher but see fewer people.
Does the arctic biome cause cold damage?expand_more
Yes — without warm clothing you take cold damage in the arctic, and at night in the tundra too. Pack a hazmat or warm clothes before heading up there.
