How Rust Genetics Work

Every plant in Rust has six genes. Three are good — G (growth speed), Y (yield) and H (hardiness) — and two are bad — W (higher water need) and X (empty).

When you clone a plant and grow it in a planter next to other plants, it crossbreeds: for each of its six gene slots, it can take a gene from a neighbouring plant. Surround the clone you want to improve with plants that carry your target genes, and over a few generations you breed toward a “god clone” — usually GGYYYY for a fast, high-yield crop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does crossbreeding work in Rust?expand_more

When a cloned plant grows in a planter, each of its 6 gene slots can be replaced by a gene taken from the surrounding plants. So the more plants with the gene you want at a slot, the higher the chance your clone inherits it there.

What do the genes G, Y, H, W and X mean?expand_more

G increases growth speed, Y increases yield (crop amount), and H increases hardiness. W (water need) and X (empty) are the bad genes you want to breed out.

What is the best genome in Rust?expand_more

For most crops the ideal is a mix of Growth and Yield — commonly GGYYYY or GYGYGY. Pure GGGGGG grows fastest; YYYYYY gives the most crops per harvest.

How do I use this calculator?expand_more

Add every clone you own and set each plant's 6 genes. The tool shows the most likely gene per slot and lets you set a target genome to see the exact odds of breeding it.

How many plants should I put in a planter?expand_more

A large planter holds up to 9 plants. Surround the clone you want to improve with breeder plants that carry your target genes to raise the odds each crossbreed.
