Rust Maps
Every Rust world is generated from two numbers — a seed and a size. Here's how that works, what the sizes and biomes mean, and how to read a map at a glance.
How Rust maps work
Rust doesn't ship hand-made maps. Every world is procedurally generated from a seed (a number) and a world size (in metres). The same seed and size always produce the exact same world — the same island shape, monuments, roads and rivers — on any server, which is why seeds get shared and copied.
That also means maps are tied to the wipe. When a server changes its seed or size — usually at the monthly force wipe — the whole world changes with it. A seed is worth knowing for one wipe, not forever.

Map sizes
What 3000, 3500, 4000 and 4500 actually mean, and which size suits your server.
Map seeds
How a seed decides the whole world, and how to set one on your own server.
Biomes
Arctic, tundra, temperate and arid — where to start and what each one costs you.
Reading the map

Map sizes at a glance
| Size | Area | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 3000 | 3 × 3 km | Tight and fast — solos, duos and low-pop servers. Monuments are close together, so travel and roams are short. |
| 3500 | 3.5 × 3.5 km | A common default. Enough room for a healthy population without the map feeling empty. |
| 4000 | 4 × 4 km | The typical high-pop vanilla size — space for lots of bases and every monument, without huge dead zones. |
| 4500 | 4.5 × 4.5 km | Big-server territory. More monuments and more room to hide a base, but longer travel to fights. |
Servers can pick any size from 1000 to 6000, but almost all sit between 3000 and 4500.
The four biomes
Bright white, usually a band along one edge of the map.
Pale blue-green with darker pine cover.
Green, the largest share of most maps.
Sandy tan/yellow, usually opposite the arctic edge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do Rust maps work?expand_more
Every Rust world is procedurally generated from a seed and a world size. The same seed and size always produce the same map, so worlds are shared and copied by their seed rather than drawn by hand.
Do Rust maps change?expand_more
Yes — a server's map changes whenever it changes its seed or size, which most do at the monthly force wipe. A given map only exists for that wipe.
How big is a Rust map?expand_more
It depends on the server's world size. Most run between 3000 and 4500 metres across — a 4000 map is 4 km × 4 km. Sizes can range from 1000 to 6000.
How many biomes are in Rust?expand_more
Four: arctic, tundra, temperate and arid. They band across the map from frozen to desert, and the biome you start in shapes your early game.
