How to Get High Quality Metal (HQM) in Rust

Recycle weapon bodies. A single Rifle Body, SMG Body, or Semi Automatic Body breaks down into 20 High Quality Metal each, and you'll pull them out of crates you were looting anyway. That's the fastest HQM in the game — faster than mining, faster than smelting — and most players sit on a box of bodies without realizing they're hoarding a workbench upgrade.

High quality metal (HQM) is the late-game bottleneck — and it starts earlier than most players think, because a Workbench Level 2 already costs 20 HQM and even the humble Semi-Automatic Rifle needs 4. From the game files, the big sinks: a Workbench Level 3 costs 100 HQM, an Assault Rifle 50, an HMLMG 60, a Rocket Launcher 40, an Armored Door 20, a Metal Chest Plate 18, a Metal Facemask 15, an Auto Turret 10. Everything you actually want at tier three eats HQM by the tens. Here's every way to get it, ranked.

Method 1: Recycle bodies and tech trash (fastest)

The recycler yields, same numbers our recycle pages run on:

ItemHQMScrap alongside
Rifle Body2025
SMG Body2015
Semi Automatic Body2015
Tech Trash1020
Gears11

One rifle body is an armored door's worth of HQM. Two bodies and a piece of tech trash out-produce a long mining session, and you get scrap on top. The rule from the recycling guide applies: recycle the bodies you won't build into guns, keep the ones you will. Find your nearest machine on the recycler map and clear your component box every monument run.

One warning on tech trash: it's also the ingredient in C4 and turrets, so check what you're planning to craft before you liquidate it. Full breakdown here.

Method 2: Smelt HQM ore

Mining nodes occasionally pay out High Quality Metal Ore alongside the stone, metal, and sulfur — it comes in small amounts, which is why nobody farms HQM from rock alone. The ore smelts 1:1 into HQM, but slowly: in a standard Furnace one ore takes 6.67 seconds and 3.33 wood, in a Large Furnace 1.33 seconds and 0.67 wood, and in an Electric Furnace 4 seconds with no wood at all. HQM ore is the slowest smelt in the game — twice the time of metal ore — so batch it in a Large Furnace and go do something else.

This route is steady background income, not a burst. It matters most on fresh wipes before the component economy is flowing.

Method 3: Loot it directly

HQM drops as raw metal in the current game files (v2631.286.1):

  • chevron_rightLocked Crate — 53.2% chance of 15–80 HQM. The single biggest haul in the game.
  • chevron_rightAirdrop — 64.7% chance of 32–80.
  • chevron_rightElite Crate — 20.1% chance of 15.
  • chevron_rightMilitary Crate — 16.7% chance of 15.
  • chevron_rightMetal Detector finds — 32% chance of 3–5 per dig (sourced table).

A hacked Locked Crate or a contested airdrop can pay 80 HQM in one hit — plus the same crates drop the weapon bodies and tech trash from Method 1, so a good crate run pays HQM twice.

Fastest route verdict

Recycling wins, and it compounds. Run military and elite crate routes, keep every body and tech trash, and feed the recycler on the way out — you're stacking HQM and scrap from the same inventory. Smelting HQM ore is the passive backfill while you're home, and Locked Crates are the jackpot when you can hold one. Before you commit a pile to a craft, check the exact cost in the craft calculator — a tier-3 bench plus an AK is 150 HQM, which is about eight weapon bodies' worth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get high quality metal in Rust?expand_more

Four ways: recycle weapon bodies (20 HQM each) and tech trash (10 each), smelt High Quality Metal Ore 1:1 in a furnace, loot it from crates (Locked Crates drop 15–80 at a 53.2% chance), or dig it up with a Metal Detector. Recycling components is the fastest.

What gives the most HQM when recycled in Rust?expand_more

Rifle Bodies, SMG Bodies, and Semi Automatic Bodies — 20 high quality metal each, plus 15–25 scrap. Tech Trash is next at 10 HQM. Gears give 1 each but drop constantly.

How long does HQM ore take to smelt?expand_more

It smelts 1:1 but it's the slowest ore in the game: 6.67 seconds and 3.33 wood per ore in a standard Furnace, 1.33 seconds in a Large Furnace, and 4 seconds in an Electric Furnace with no wood cost.

What is high quality metal used for in Rust?expand_more

The expensive end of the game: 100 for a Workbench Level 3, 50 for an Assault Rifle, 60 for an HMLMG, 40 for a Rocket Launcher, 20 for an Armored Door, and 15–18 for metal armor pieces. It starts earlier than tier three, too — a Workbench Level 2 is 20 HQM and a Semi-Automatic Rifle needs 4.

How do you get high quality metal in Rust console edition?expand_more

The same core routes — recycle weapon bodies and tech trash, smelt HQM ore, and loot crates. The methods are identical; only the UI and controls differ. Console runs an older build of the game, though, so exact recycler yields and drop chances can lag behind the current PC numbers listed here.
