How to Get Cloth in Rust (Every Method)

Pick hemp. That's the answer for most of your cloth, most of the wipe: hemp bushes spawn wild in grassy biomes, cost nothing to harvest, and hand you cloth plus seeds to plant your own. Animal harvesting and the recycler fill in the rest — and the recycler numbers are better than most players realise.

First, why you need it. Cloth is the fabric of your first night: your respawn point, your healing, and half your wardrobe are made of it. What it costs, straight from the game files:

Method 1: Hemp (wild, then farmed)

Wild hemp bushes are the classic source — walk the grass, look for the tall leafy plant, press E. Every pick also drops hemp seeds, and that's where the real cloth economy starts: planted hemp in a planter massively outproduces wandering, and it's the crop everyone learns genetics on because the seeds are trivial to mass-collect. Method 2: Harvest animals

Animal corpses give cloth alongside meat, fat and bone — the same hunting loop that feeds the low grade fuel recipe with animal fat covers the cloth half of that recipe too. Your harvesting tool matters more than the animal: per the game files, the Combat Knife gathers 20 flesh per hit with nothing wasted, the Butcher and Skinning Knives 18, a Hatchet 12 — while a Rock manages 10 and destroys half of what it hits. Method 3: Recycle it

Three components exist mostly to become cloth. Rope recycles into 15 cloth, a Sewing Kit into 10 cloth plus 2 scrap, and a Tarp into a huge 50 cloth. Barrels along roads and rivers spill these constantly, so a monument run's "junk" components are secretly a cloth stockpile — feed them through any machine on the recycler map before you even think about selling them. First hour: pick everything green you walk past. Wild hemp plus the cloth off your first boar covers a sleeping bag and bandages. After that: recycle the components you're already looting — rope, sewing kits and tarp pay out 15/10/50, which outpaces foraging per minute of effort. Settled in: plant hemp.
