How to Get Low Grade Fuel in Rust (Every Method)

Kill animals, harvest the fat, craft it with cloth. That's the answer for 90% of players: 3 Animal Fat + 1 Cloth crafts into 4 Low Grade Fuel, no workbench needed, and it's a default blueprint so a fresh spawn can do it. Everything else — crude oil refining, crate drops — is for when you need fuel in bulk.

First, why you need it. Low grade fuel is the game's petrol: it powers lanterns and every vehicle you'll fly or drive, and it's baked into the build cost of your smelting setup. The recipes that eat it, straight from the game files:

That last row is the sneaky one: a single C4 charge is 20 Explosives, so every C4 quietly carries 60 low grade inside it. Raid stockpiles aren't just sulfur — they're fuel too.

And then there are vehicles, which don't craft with low grade — they drink it. From the datamined burn rates: every helicopter (minicopter, scrap heli, attack heli) burns 0.5 low grade per second at throttle — 30 a minute — so a minicopter's 100-fuel tank is about 3 minutes 20 seconds of hard flying. On the water, a rowboat sips 0.1/sec, a RHIB 0.25/sec, and a tugboat 0.33/sec (~20 a minute). Motorbikes are the cheap commute at 0.03/sec idling up to 0.125/sec flat out. Method 1: Animal fat + cloth (the default)

The recipe is 3× Animal Fat + 1× Cloth → 4× Low Grade Fuel, craftable anywhere with no workbench. Animal fat comes from harvesting animal corpses — boars, deer, bears, wolves, horses — with a knife, hatchet, or better harvesting tool. Bears and horses are big fat piles; boars are the everyday source since they're everywhere and don't fight back much. The cloth comes off the same corpses plus hemp bushes, so a single hunting loop feeds both halves of the recipe.

This is the fastest route early and stays viable forever. A short hunting run along a river or forest edge fills a furnace build and a lantern with fuel to spare.

Method 2: Refine crude oil

The Small Oil Refinery turns Crude Oil into low grade fuel — that's its whole job. Crude comes from monument loot and pump jacks rather than your farming loop, so this is the bulk route: when you're fueling a vehicle habit or a raid's worth of incendiary rockets, refining crude beats skinning boars all day.

The catch is the buy-in. The refinery is a Workbench Level 2 craft costing 200 Wood, 500 Metal Fragments, and — yes — 250 Low Grade Fuel. You hunt your way to your first refinery, then the refinery takes over. Some monuments have public refineries you can use before you own one; check the map around you before committing the mats.

Method 3: Loot it directly

Low grade shows up as straight loot, but rarely. In the current game files (v2631.286.1), the Elite Crate has a 6.5% chance to drop 35 Low Grade Fuel per roll. That's a nice top-up on a Launch Site or Oil Rig run, not a farming strategy — none of the common crates or barrels pay out fuel. If you're at elite crates anyway you're there for the rest of the table, and the fuel is gravy.

Fastest route verdict

Early wipe: hunt. Two or three animals and the hemp you pass on the way is a furnace's worth of fuel in ten minutes. Mid wipe onward: refine. Once you can afford the Small Oil Refinery (or squat a public one), crude oil scales way past what hunting can produce, and that's what keeps a minicopter in the air.
