How to Make Gunpowder in Rust (Recipe & Farming Route)

The recipe is 30 Charcoal + 20 Sulfur → 10 Gun Powder at a Workbench Level 1 — a 3:2 ratio, and it's a default blueprint, so nothing to research. You don't find gunpowder in the world in any meaningful way; it doesn't appear in the computed loot tables at all. You make it, which means the real question is how fast you can feed the recipe.

First, the demand side, because gunpowder is the base of everything that goes bang. Straight from the game files:

What it costs gunpowderAmount
Handmade Shell (makes 2)5
Pistol Bullet (makes 4)5
5.56 Rifle Ammo (makes 3)5
12 Gauge Buckshot (makes 2)10
F1 Grenade30
Survey Charge30
Beancan Grenade60
Satchel Charge (4 beancans)240
Rocket (150 + 10 Explosives)650
Explosives (each)50

A Timed Explosive Charge is 20 Explosives — 1,000 gunpowder before you've counted the rest of the C4 recipe. Raiding is a gunpowder logistics problem wearing a trench coat. Here's the supply chain, in order.

Step 1: Charcoal (the free half)

Charcoal is a byproduct of burning wood — every furnace and campfire you run spits it out while doing its normal job. You almost never farm charcoal on purpose; you smelt ore, cook food, and wake up rich in the stuff. If you do need a deliberate batch, stuff a furnace with wood and let it burn. The smelting calculator tells you exactly how much wood a target charcoal pile costs, fuel included.

Step 2: Sulfur (the bottleneck)

Sulfur is the half you'll actually grind. Sulfur ore comes from the yellow-flecked nodes, smelts in any furnace, and every serious raid stockpile is really a sulfur stockpile. Mining quarries and the excavator turn the grind industrial — the quarries guide covers which ones pay out sulfur and what running them costs. Before a farming session, drink an Ore Tea: the basic tier is +20% ore yield from nodes, rising to +35% and +50% at higher tiers, and sulfur nodes count — recipes on the mixing table page. Then plug your target into the sulfur calculator so you mine a number, not a vibe.

Step 3: Craft it down

With both halves banked, craft at a Tier 1 workbench or better: every 30 charcoal and 20 sulfur becomes 10 gunpowder, and the craft is quick — 2 seconds per batch of 10, so a thousand gunpowder queues up in under three and a half minutes. Do the conversion in bulk before a raid rather than nibbling at it — gunpowder itself is only the midpoint, since Explosives eat another 10 sulfur each (plus low grade fuel and metal fragments) on the way to rockets and C4. The boom calculator rolls a whole raid's shopping list — gunpowder, sulfur, charcoal, the lot — into one number.

Fastest route verdict

There is no loot shortcut — the fastest route is the farming loop done properly. Run your furnaces on ore around the clock so charcoal accrues for free, spend your active time on sulfur nodes with an Ore Tea running, and quarry when you hold one. Charcoal is never the constraint; sulfur always is, so measure every raid plan in sulfur first. Ten minutes with the sulfur calculator before you start swinging turns "farm until sad" into an actual to-do list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make gunpowder in Rust?expand_more

Craft 30 Charcoal + 20 Sulfur into 10 Gun Powder at a Workbench Level 1. It's a default blueprint, so no research is needed. Charcoal comes free from burning wood in furnaces and campfires; sulfur is smelted from sulfur ore mined at nodes and quarries.

How do you get gunpowder in Rust?expand_more

You craft it — gunpowder doesn't appear in the computed loot tables, so there's no realistic way to loot your way to a stockpile. The whole route is: burn wood for charcoal, mine and smelt sulfur ore, then convert at a 3:2 charcoal-to-sulfur ratio into batches of 10.

What is gunpowder used for in Rust?expand_more

Every explosive and almost all ammo: 5 gunpowder per craft of pistol or 5.56 rifle ammo, 5 per pair of Handmade Shells, 30 per F1 Grenade, 60 per Beancan Grenade, 240 per Satchel Charge, 650 per Rocket, and 50 per unit of Explosives — of which a single C4 charge needs 20, or 1,000 gunpowder.

How do you make gunpowder in Rust console edition?expand_more

The same recipe — 30 Charcoal + 20 Sulfur into 10 Gun Powder at a workbench. The process is identical; only the UI and controls differ. Console runs an older build of the game, though, so exact craft costs and times can lag behind the current PC numbers listed here.
