How to Get Metal Fragments in Rust (Fastest Ways)
Mine metal ore, smelt it. Metal ore smelts 1:1 into metal fragments, nodes are everywhere, and nothing else produces frags at that volume. Recycling metallic junk is the top-up; the furnace is the factory.
Metal fragments are the workhorse resource of the mid game. From the game files, the things you'll actually spend them on: Workbench Level 1 costs 100 frags, Level 2 costs 500, Level 3 costs 1,000. A Sheet Metal Door is 150, a Code Lock 100, a Garage Door 300, a Shotgun Trap 250, a Flame Turret 200, and a Semi-Automatic Rifle 450. Your door, your lock, your bench, your gun — all frags. Here's how to keep the pile growing.
Method 1: Mine and smelt (the volume play)
Hit the metal nodes — the rocks with the shiny silver seams — with a pickaxe or better. Then smelt the ore, and this is where the numbers matter. Per ore, from the same smelting data our calculators use:
| Furnace | Time per ore | Wood per ore |
|---|---|---|
| Furnace | 3.33s | 1.67 |
| Large Furnace | 0.67s | 0.33 |
| Electric Furnace | 2s | 0 |
The Large Furnace is five times faster and five times cheaper on wood than the starter Furnace — it's the single biggest upgrade to your frag economy. The Electric Furnace burns no wood at all, which turns a solar-and-battery setup into free smelting. Whatever you run, keep it full: ore in your box is not frags on your door.
Method 2: Recycle metallic components
Every road run fills your inventory with metal junk, and all of it breaks down into frags. The yields, same data as the recycle chart:
| Item | Metal Fragments | Scrap alongside |
|---|---|---|
| Gears | 13 | 1 |
| Sheet Metal | 10 | 8 |
| Metal Pipe | 10 | 5 |
| Road Signs | 10 | 5 |
| Metal Blade | 5 | 2 |
Individually small, but these drop from barrels and crates constantly and they stack. A barrel run's worth of pipes, signs, and blades through a recycler is a Sheet Metal Door plus a Code Lock without touching a node — and you bank the scrap on the same button press, which is the whole engine behind the scrap farming loop. Just don't recycle the gears you need for a garage door (it takes 2) before you've built it.
One scavenger's footnote from the game files: the Empty Tuna Can and Empty Can of Beans left over after eating canned food are flagged as smeltable into metal fragments — toss them in the furnace with your ore instead of dropping them. It's pocket change, but it's free pocket change.
Method 3: Metal detector digs
The Metal Detector's dig sites pay out frags directly: from the sourced finds table, a 53% chance of 20–25 Metal Fragments per dig, alongside road signs (71% chance of 4–5 — which recycle into another 10 frags each) and a 32% shot at small High Quality Metal finds. It's a relaxed, low-risk trickle rather than a farm, but if you enjoy the detector loop it genuinely pays.
Fastest route verdict
Smelting wins on volume, recycling wins on convenience. The real answer is both on the same loop: mine the nodes between monuments, drop the ore in a Large Furnace when you're home, and feed every gear, pipe, and road sign to the recycler on your way past. That combination funds a workbench tier in an evening. Price out your next build's exact frag bill in the craft calculator before you commit — and once frags stop being your bottleneck, high quality metal will be.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get metal fragments in Rust?expand_more
Three ways: smelt metal ore in a furnace (1:1, so 1,000 ore is 1,000 frags), recycle metallic components — gears give 13, sheet metal, pipes, and road signs give 10 each — or dig with a Metal Detector (53% chance of 20–25 per find). Mining and smelting is the volume route.
How long does metal ore take to smelt?expand_more
3.33 seconds and 1.67 wood per ore in a standard Furnace, 0.67 seconds and 0.33 wood in a Large Furnace, and 2 seconds with zero wood in an Electric Furnace. The Large Furnace is five times faster than the starter one.
What recycles into metal fragments in Rust?expand_more
Gears (13 frags), Sheet Metal (10), Metal Pipes (10), Road Signs (10), and Metal Blades (5) — all with scrap on top. They drop from barrels and crates constantly, so a road run's junk converts into a door's worth of frags.
What do metal fragments craft in Rust?expand_more
Most of the mid game: Workbench Level 1/2/3 cost 100/500/1,000 frags, a Sheet Metal Door is 150, a Code Lock 100, a Garage Door 300, a Shotgun Trap 250, and a Semi-Automatic Rifle 450.
